all the words there are for colors: cobalt,

rose, celadon, rust, saffron, blush, apricot,

gold. But words for human tones? Not

really olive or yellow, nor beige or brown,

not exactly gray, black or white.

They enter the desert—a blank on the map

slit by I-15, its red line flaring through heat—

and the landscape opens like a naked body,

trembles with skin-colored hills, bone-pale

rocks, coppery shadows and deep

crevices, dark. Everything around them

vague with nameless hues: all the shades

of skin, hair, nails—eyes even.

And yet, they drive on
